Tanzania eVisa for US Citizens: Multiple-Entry Tourist Rules and How to Apply

Tanzania eVisa for US Citizens: Multiple-Entry Tourist Rules and How to Apply

United States passport holders are eligible to use this Tanzania eVisa application service. They are not visa-exempt. The tourist product commonly shown for U.S. travelers is a multiple-entry visa valid for one year, with each stay limited to 90 days. Confirm the exact product on the live form; do not assume a single-entry 90-day visa is the only option, and do not assume every other nationality is offered the same multiple-entry type.

Quick answer: Open the United States requirements page, allow up to 15 business days, keep arrival at least 12 days away, and apply with the U.S. passport you will carry. Review fees before payment.

Do US citizens need a Tanzania visa?

Yes. For ordinary tourist, business or transit travel, a U.S. citizen needs a visa unless a later official rule says otherwise. Recheck the United States page if you are reading this after a policy change.

This website is an application-assistance service, not Tanzania Immigration and not a U.S. government site. Tanzania Immigration still decides the application and admission at the port of entry. A U.S. passport, Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or a previous African visa does not replace a Tanzania authorization.

ESTA and a U.S. visa stamp in someone else's passport are irrelevant here. Only the Tanzania product attached to the passport you will present matters.

Volunteer, journalist, researcher or paid workerNot as a tourist defaultMatch the real purpose; tourist is the wrong box if you are going to work

If two passports exist, pick one before you buy the ticket. The eVisa, the boarding pass name and the book at the immigration desk must be the same document.

Which visa type to choose

Trip purposeTypical product on this siteStay / entries as listed
Safari, Zanzibar, family visit, leisureTourist eVisa, multiple entry (U.S. and select others)1 year validity; each stay up to 90 days
Meetings, short business activity, many conferencesBusiness eVisaSingle entry, up to 90 days
Airside or short onward connection that is truly transitTransit eVisaSingle entry, up to 7 days

If you will enter Tanzania, go on safari, fly to Zanzibar, and leave from DAR or ZNZ, that is tourism—not transit. A 7-day transit product is not a discount safari visa.

Paid work, journalism assignments, filming or volunteering can fall outside a tourist visa. Do not force those trips into the tourist form because the government fee is lower. Conference travelers should also read the conference checklist.

A two-centre holiday (northern circuit then Zanzibar) is still one Tanzania tourist stay if you never leave the United Republic. The domestic hop from JRO or Arusha to ZNZ is not a second visa event. See Do you need a separate visa for Zanzibar?.

How the multiple-entry tourist visa actually works

On this website the U.S. tourist product is listed as multiple entry for one year, with each stay not exceeding 90 days. That is not a 365-day residence permit and not a guarantee that you can reset a 90-day clock by crossing to Kenya for a weekend.

Read the approval text when it arrives. Plan each visit inside the stay limit printed there. If you will also enter Kenya, Rwanda or Uganda, those are separate immigration systems. A Tanzania multiple-entry visa does not admit you to Nairobi. Use the multi-destination planner for East African combinations.

If you only need one holiday in the next year, the multiple-entry type can still be the product this form shows for a U.S. tourist. Do not downgrade to a type the form does not offer for your passport, and do not invent a single-entry application to “keep it simple” if the live options say otherwise.

Fees for US applicants

On this website the multiple-entry tourist government fee is listed at US$145, plus US$59.99 service fee per passenger. Business is listed at US$295 government fee plus the same service fee. Transit is listed at US$75 plus service fee.

ExampleGovernment feeService feeTotal on this site
One U.S. adult, tourist multiple-entryUS$145US$59.99US$204.99
Two U.S. adults, same tourist productUS$290US$119.98US$409.98
One adult, businessUS$295US$59.99US$354.99

Use the fees calculator for the live total. Card-issuer foreign-transaction charges sit outside this quote. The fee explainer lists park fees, flights and Zanzibar insurance as separate costs—those often dwarf the eVisa line.

Children are priced per passenger on the calculator unless the live form shows a different government rule for that child. Do not assume a child is free because another country's visa was free.

Documents to prepare

Use the shared requirements checklist, then add trip-specific evidence:

  • U.S. passport bio page, fully visible, including the photograph and machine-readable zone
  • Recent color photograph of the applicant, unfiltered, face clearly visible
  • Intended arrival and departure dates that match the ticket you will actually use
  • Accommodation or safari voucher, or a host address for a private visit
  • Onward or return travel
  • For business: invitation or employer letter describing the activity, dates and who pays
  • For children: each child's U.S. passport plus consent documents described in the children's visa guide

Names must match the passport, including middle names. If the airline ticket dropped a middle name, immigration still compares the visa to the passport, not to the 20-character airline field.

Yellow-fever certificate rules depend on your routing, including transit through risk countries, not on being a U.S. citizen. Check current health-entry guidance for the exact path, not a 2019 forum post.

Photo and passport-scan standards

Most U.S. files that bounce at document review fail for a photograph problem, not for the itinerary:

  • Capture the full passport bio page; do not crop the page number or expiry date
  • Avoid glare from a phone flash on the laminate
  • Do not photograph the passport on a busy bedspread; use a plain surface
  • Use a recent photo of the traveler, not a cropped passport image as the “applicant photograph”
  • No sunglasses, hats or beauty filters
  • Upload the file type and size the form accepts

If support asks for a clearer scan, replace the file on this application. A second paid application does not clean the first.

Arrival airports, Zanzibar and land borders

Common U.S. routings land at:

CodeAirportTypical U.S. trip
JROKilimanjaro InternationalArusha, northern safari, Kilimanjaro climb
DARJulius Nyerere, Dar es SalaamCity, southern parks, some Zanzibar ferries
ZNZAbeid Amani Karume, ZanzibarIsland-first holiday
MWZMwanzaLake Victoria connections

U.S.–Tanzania flights are rarely nonstop. Connections through Europe, the Gulf or Addis Ababa are normal. Put the first Tanzania immigration airport on the form, not the last beach hotel and not the European hub.

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania. A Tanzania eVisa covers entry to the United Republic; you do not obtain a second “Zanzibar visa.” Island insurance or other local rules can still apply. Declare the airport or border you will actually use. The entry-points FAQ lists designated land borders such as Namanga if you will drive from Kenya after a separate Kenya entry.

A realistic US itinerary calendar

A northern-circuit plus Zanzibar trip from the United States usually needs visa time before the first prepaid camp, not after.

  1. Confirm nationality on the United States page.
  2. Lock approximate safari dates with an operator who can still move them by a few days.
  3. Apply with an arrival date at least 12 days away.
  4. Allow up to 15 business days. See processing time.
  5. Buy the long-haul ticket you cannot change only when the file is complete enough that a document request will not wreck the itinerary—or keep the ticket changeable.

July–October migration months and U.S. winter holidays fill both lodges and seats. Applying in the same week as departure is how people hit the form's 12-day arrival lockout. This is not a 24-hour visa; the urgent processing FAQ explains why paying more does not create one.

Kilimanjaro climbers should not set the international return for the morning after summit night. Build descent, buffer and the JRO check-in into the dates on the visa form.

What to carry at immigration

  • The U.S. passport used in the application
  • Printed eVisa approval and a copy on your phone, offline
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Lodge or hotel confirmation
  • Proof of funds if asked
  • Any health document required for your routing

Approval is not admission. The officer at JRO, DAR or ZNZ can still refuse entry if the purpose, passport or supporting papers do not match.

Common delays for US files

  • Applying on a passport you will renew before the trip
  • Ticket in a nickname (“Bob”) while the passport says Robert
  • Selecting transit to save US$70 on a 12-day safari
  • Listing ZNZ when the first landing is JRO, or the reverse
  • Uploading a screenshot of a Digital Vaccination Card as if it were a passport
  • Second application created because the first felt slow
  • Treating a Kenya eVisa as if it covered Tanzania

The walkthrough for the actual screens is in how to apply.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use visa on arrival instead?

Some U.S. travelers have historically used an arrival visa, but airline boarding rules and current immigration practice are what matter on your date of travel. If you want a decision before a long-haul flight, use the eVisa. Compare routes in eVisa vs visa on arrival.

Does the multiple-entry visa cover Kenya or Rwanda?

No. Each country has its own entry rules. A Tanzania multiple-entry visa is for Tanzania, including Zanzibar.

My child is on my passport.

Tanzania travel still needs a valid travel document for the child. Unclear passport arrangements are a reason to stop and fix documents before applying.

Can I work remotely on a tourist visa?

A tourist visa is for tourism and similar visits. Immigration can refuse entry if the stated purpose does not match the trip. Do not rely on a blog post as permission to work.

I already have a Tanzania visa from a previous trip.

Check the expiry, remaining entries and whether it is in the same passport. An old visa in a cancelled passport is not reusable.

Do I need an empty page?

Plan for an unused passport page. A book that is full is a reason to renew before you apply, not after approval.
